Accessibility Statement for defence.nu

The Defence Foundation is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We are continually improving the user experience for everyone and applying the relevant accessibility standards.

This accessibility statement describes how https://www.defence.nu complies with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Furthermore, it outlines any known accessibility issues. Finally, it explains how you can report barriers to us so that we can address them.

Conformance Status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. Specifically, it defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.

The Defence Foundation website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA. This means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard due to the known limitations listed below.

Accessibility Limitations

We are aware of the following accessibility issues on our website:

  • Header Navigation Contrast: The navigation links in the site’s main header may have low color contrast against the background in their initial state on the homepage. This is a result of a specific design choice to use a transparent header with dark text upon page load. The contrast is corrected once the user begins to scroll and the header becomes opaque.

  • Footer Anchor Link: The link to the contact information in the footer is implemented using a non-standard element for linking. While this is fully functional for most users, some assistive technologies may not interpret it as a conventional link.

Measures Taken to Improve Accessibility

We have undertaken a systematic effort to ensure and improve the accessibility of our website. To illustrate, this includes the following measures:

  • Ensuring a logical and correct heading structure (semantic HTML) to facilitate the use of screen readers.

  • Implementing a clear typographic hierarchy with a legible typeface and generous line spacing to enhance readability.

  • Carefully reviewing and adjusting most text and component colours to meet the WCAG AA requirements for colour contrast.

  • Designing a responsive layout that adapts and functions well on various screen sizes, from mobile to desktop.

  • Structuring the site to allow for full navigation using only the keyboard.

  • Providing text alternatives (alt text) for most non-textual elements.

Assessment Approach

We have assessed the website’s accessibility using automated tools. Primarily, we use the WAVE Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool. We also conduct manual reviews of the site’s structure and functionality.
